Why are the gypsy/ travelers discriminated against in the UK?

I'm watching the episode of "My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding" where they are getting their homes demolished and I am wondering why they cannot build, and in general why are they treated as they are in UK society, like venues not wanting to host their weddings and the perceived discrimination by the traveler community. Would someone give me a little insight on this? Thanks
